Chess is a game of patience, concentration and precision. Every piece has its place, every move has meaning, and even the smallest interruption can change the course of a game.
When we developed our first roll-up leather chess set at MELIA, our goal was to create a luxurious chess experience that could be taken anywhere. But once we began using the set in real travel situations, we discovered a problem.
On a boat, a terrace, an uneven table or any surface affected by movement, the chess pieces could fall over or shift from their positions.
In most games, a displaced piece may be a minor inconvenience. In chess, it can be disastrous. A single moved or overturned piece can make it difficult to remember the exact position and may interrupt an otherwise absorbing game.
We therefore asked ourselves a simple question:
How could we preserve the elegance and portability of our roll-up chess set while making the pieces more stable during travel?
The answer became the foundation of MELIA’s magnetic roll-up chess set.
Why ordinary chess sets are difficult to use while travelling
Traditional chess boards are usually designed for stable tables and quiet interiors. This works perfectly at home, in a library or in a chess club.
Travel creates very different conditions.

Our first roll-up chess design already combined portability with the character of genuine leather. It could be rolled into a compact shape and carried without the rigid dimensions of a traditional wooden chess box.
The concept worked beautifully.
However, testing the set in everyday travel situations showed us that the chess pieces needed more stability. This became especially clear when the game was played on a boat or on surfaces that were not completely level.
We did not want to replace the roll-up concept. We wanted to improve it.
The solution was to integrate magnetism into both the board and the chess pieces.
Each playing field was equipped to interact with the corresponding magnetic chess pieces. The attraction needed to be strong enough to keep the pieces securely in position, but subtle enough that every move still felt natural.
The result was a chess set that could retain the flexibility and elegance of a leather roll-up board while offering much greater stability during play.
This was not magnetism added simply as a technical feature. It was developed in response to a genuine problem experienced while using the original product.
Why magnetic chess is particularly useful on a boat
A boat is perhaps the clearest example of why magnetic chess pieces can make such a difference.
Even in calm conditions, a boat is rarely completely still. Gentle movement can cause lightweight pieces to slide, rotate or fall over. A sudden wave may disturb several pieces at once.
For a chess game, this can be especially frustrating.
The position on the board represents the complete history of the game. When several pieces are displaced, reconstructing that position may be difficult or even impossible.

At MELIA, we wanted to approach travel chess differently.
A travel product should be easy to carry, but it should still feel special when it is opened and placed on a table.
