Why We Started
When we created our first handcrafted roll-up leather chess set, our goal was simple.
We wanted to build a chess set that could travel anywhere while preserving the elegance and tactile experience of a traditional wooden chessboard.

For many players, it became exactly that.
Then we started taking it everywhere ourselves.
A Small Problem That Changed Everything
Aboard boats.

Even a slight movement could occasionally shift a chess piece.
Unlike many board games, chess depends entirely on the exact position of every piece. A single accidental movement can interrupt concentration—or even change the outcome of a game.
We realised that travel chess didn't need stronger magnets.

We Didn't Want the Strongest Magnets
Many magnetic chess sets solve the problem by using extremely strong magnets.
At first glance, that sounds like the perfect solution.
In reality, it creates a different problem.
Pieces begin to stick to the board.
Moving them requires unnecessary force.
The leather board can lift slightly when a piece is picked up.

For us, that was never acceptable.

Rather than asking how strong a magnet could be, we asked a different question:
How weak can it be while still doing its job?
That question shaped the entire development process.
Every magnet inside a MELIA chess piece was carefully calibrated to provide just enough holding force to prevent accidental movement while preserving the natural feel of traditional chess.
